Event Project

For my Cinematography module and Editing and Structures module of the Film and TV Production course, one of my assignments was called ‘The Event Project’

The brief that we were given was: 'You are asked to shoot documentary video material of an event.'

This was shot for the Cinematography module while it was edited in the Editing and Structures module.

Unfortunately I am unable to embed the video but you can find it on Vimeo via this link: https://vimeo.com/55031825

Vimeo

Hi everyone,
I haven't posted for a while but I've been super busy with my course. To keep an eye on what I've been doing I have created a Vimeo account which you can find here: https://vimeo.com/kimberleymbates. I will be posting videos that I think are worth showing people and hopefully you'll be able to see a progress with my work.

This is the first 'video' I put up on Vimeo. It's actually just audio as the task brief was to tell a story through sound: https://vimeo.com/52241911

Film Assignment

Today Aiden and I went on a walk around Cambridge trying to find the locations we wanted to use for our film assignment for the Screen and Drama module of the course.

For the film assignment we are to make a short film, 3 to 5 minutes long, with the brief:
'A boy is attracted to a girl. It appears the girl gives him a sign. The boy chases the girl. The final twist.'

The next set of instructions we were given read:

'Try to enrich the story as much as you can; you can change the circumstances, gender of the characters, place the action of the film in different surroundings, make it a period piece, science fiction, a farce, comedy, tragedy, whatever.'

We've come up with a story line and found our locations so all we need now is to pitch the film and hopefully get the go ahead to film this.

Here are some of the photos from today; with a few fun ones:

YR Production Company

So guys, I've been at university for 3 weeks now. Yesterday, I was made co-owner of YR Production Company. This film production company was founded and is owned by Aiden Astle. The company was founded on November 10, 2011 and is on the up from this year onwards. We have some very exciting projects in store for the next year. Our first major project will be pitched within the next two weeks to the Film and Arts Society of Anglia Ruskin University. Hopefully upon their approval we shall start production and see our aims, goals and of course the final product.

We are looking to work with people of all ages, students who are just coming out of university and need work, experience film makers who want to further the experience and knowledge of up-coming film makers.

So please have a look on our various pages and watch out because we will be making it big!

Interview

Yesterday, I had sent off my portfolio to Anglia Ruskin to go along with my application around 12:30 during my lunch hour. Two hours later I had an email inviting me for an interview. The interview is on the 3rd of May at 10:20 with the course tutor Robert Klenner as well as the Senior Lecturer for the Film and Television course; finding that out has really turned my tummy I know that this is 6 weeks away but I'm already incredibly nervous! I really want to get an offer or something for this course. I hope they like me. I'm going to have to start preparing now for this interview, although I have no idea what sorts of things they will be asking me about which will make it difficult.

You can view my submissions by looking at my other posts that have the portfolio tag.

Svengali

'The movie tells the story of Dixie, a small town guy with a big dream, leaving the Welsh Valleys for the bright lights of London intent on becoming the manager of the best band in the world. The film is still in the process of being filmed and editing; a release date has not yet been revealed. Svengali is a feel good British comedy with the soundtrack to match.'

The film is currently still at the filming stage but editing will start taking place in the next 2-3 months.

Director: John Hardwich
Actor/Writer/Producer: Jonny Owen
Actor: Martin Freeman
Actress: Vicky McClure

Portfolio: Final Storyboard

As you may have read on the last post, I submitted my portfolio this afternoon. These photos are screen shots of the final storyboard that I submitted. Fingers crossed, eh? I've already got an email back saying that they will be inviting me for an interview soon. I'm already nervous and I don't even have a date for the interview!

Portfolio: Essay

As you may have read I had to submit an essay as part of my portfolio to Anglia Ruskin. This is the essay that I sent off this afternoon.

'The documentary I watched was I’m in a boy band on BBC 3 because it appeals to a wide audience and is linked to music. It was about the experiences a boy gains when he is a boy band member. The audience is drawn in from the start; this is executed by a humorous analogy of boy band members as creations of God. The programme used interviews of past and present boy band members giving an anecdotic insight into the life of a member. Archive footage from concerts of various bands was used which allowed the viewer to relive the events they may have been a part of; I found this to be my favourite feature as this connected the viewer to the programme. The programme made use of quick-paced editing which was effective because it engaged the viewer’s attention through cutting between clips of concert footage, interviews and music videos. Whilst this made for stimulating television, a weakness of the production was the lack of variety in camera angles.  On the whole though, the documentary was informative and an enjoyable viewing experience.

I think that a good documentary should be both informative, entertaining and, where appropriate, aesthetically pleasing. Viewers’ emotions must be taken into account throughout the programme and the narrative should strive to create empathy with the subject. A variety of angles and shots can help to tell the story effectively.

If I was making a documentary, I would aim to use humour, drama, music and sound effects to enhance the narrative. However, while the above are important, I would strive to let the camera tell the story through a wide variety of footage, in order to maximise the viewing experience.'

Portfolio Shots

The photos that follow this post will be photos I took last week on Friday for my university portfolio submission. Some shots have more than one photo because I wanted to have a choice.

Portfolio: Gang photos

These are some group shots of Vanessa's gang. I had asked the girls to wear dark clothing and make-up, I loved how they had interpreted what I said. Veronika would play a great girl gang leader, she definitely has that look about her. I think the choice of gang members is a good mix because each girl looks like they're their own person although they are part of one group.
